Why positioning work belongs before your media budget

Paid media multiplies whatever message you give it. Make sure the message is worth multiplying.

A media budget is an amplifier. Feed it a sharp, differentiated message and it compounds. Feed it a generic one and you have simply purchased a faster route to being ignored.

We ask every new client the same question in discovery: if we removed your logo from your homepage and pasted your competitor's on, would anything read as false? If not, the positioning is not doing work.

Positioning is not a tagline exercise. It is a decision about which customers you are willing to lose in order to be the obvious choice for the ones you want.

That decision is uncomfortable, which is exactly why so few companies make it — and why the ones that do rarely need to outspend anyone.
